Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

LiveCast is a service that enables you to stream live video from your cameraphone to anyone connected to the Web. Any place where you can receive a mobile data signal will enable immediate and simple live video transmission around the globe. And that's just the start!

You can let your friends track your location on a map (even if you're moving), auto-post streams on your favorite social networks like Twitter and YouTube, and chat in real-time with fans. Your originating LiveCast is received by our automated streaming server network, where it is "propagated" (or multiplied). This allows the LiveCast to be streamed to as many concurrent viewers as you require. Your content is also instantly archived on LiveCast servers, for post event video-on-demand delivery.

You will need:

  1. A supported mobile device with video recording capability.
  2. An active LiveCast account.
  3. LiveCast's free mobile software application installed.
  4. A mobile data account with your wireless network carrier.

Compatible mobile devices for LiveCast currently include Symbian, Windows Mobile 5/6, Windows PocketPC 2003, and Windows CE devices.

We are constantly adding new devices to our list of supported mobile devices.

Of course, the faster, the better. Encoding quality of the video is optimized for all major wireless networks, including: GPRS, 1xRTT, EDGE, UMTS, EV-DO, EV-DO Rev.A, BGAN, WiFi, HSDPA, WiBro and WiMax. Please note: LiveCast does not recommend using GPRS or EDGE, as these networks tend to suffer from unreliable consistency of available data channels.

Check with your wireless network provider to obtain a mobile data account. For frequent livecasting, we strongly recommend purchasing an "all you can eat" type data account, if this is available. Alternatively, many 3G/UMTS operators offer pricing for a block of multiple hours of service or data consumption at reasonable rates, priced by the gigabyte. Avoid a metered kilobyte plan, as this will likely be horrendously expensive for video streaming (although this will certainly make your operator pleased!).

Another point to consider is that you will be utilizing the "uplink" capacity of your data account. In general, the larger the kbps rate that your data account provides for, the better the quality of video your viewers will receive.

The speed of your originating video feed will dictate the data requirement necessary for each viewer (i.e. if you are transmitting at 300 kbps Wifi speed, viewers on a 28 kbps GPRS phone will be unable to view your content). Tailor your data for the expected viewer rate to ensure maximum compatibility.

a. First, sign up for a LiveCast account at bb.livecast.com.

b. Next, login at bb.livecast.com and go to the Get Software tab. Follow the instructions and download/install the appropriate LiveCast software for your mobile devide.

c. When you're ready to start, launch LiveCast on your mobile device. Ensure that you are actively connected to the internet, and optimize the settings.

Select MY ACCOUNT to enter your username and password.

Select SETTINGS to set the quality of your video stream.

Select VIDEO INFO option to enter a title, tags and other information.

(You only need to do these set-up steps once, unless your circumstances change.)

Now, click 'Start,' and you're live! Click 'Stop' and your video is automatically archieved on the server. During the LiveCast, you can automatically send a link to share the LiveCast with selected viewers.

Setting your default location is an important part of your account set-up. You will initially be asked to do this when you sign up, but you can easily edit it later from the MY ACCOUNT tab by clickking the 'Edit Location' link.

Why does this matter? The easiest way to add location to your LiveCast feed is to sest the 'location source' of your phone to 'use default location'. You will want to make sure this is correct before you begin your first LiveCast. You can always change the location on an archieved video later, but it sames time to set it right before you shoot.

In addition to the quality setting you select on the LiveCast application, the quality of the video is determined primarily by the mobile device itself. Devices with stronger CPUs tend to handle video better, and higher resolution cameras tend to be less pixilated.

Shooting in bright light environments and keeping the camera as still as possible typically results in a higher frame rate and quality of video.

Anyone with a device connected to the Web can view your video (on a phone, PC or Mac).

Individual LiveCast pages offer Windows Media Player or QuickTime as options to view streams.

Community pages require MS Silverlight plug-in (which can be quickly downloaded and installed without closing the browser).

Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox and Safari browsers are supported.

You can LiveCast from any place where you're connected to the Web. However, as with making voice calls on cell phones, connectivity is not always at 100% in every location.

If you have difficulty maintaining a good connection, lowering the bit rate setting can often result in more stable streaming.

First you need to confirm with your wireless network what your account allows (in Kbps). If your network allows EV-DO (80 Kb), then that is your highest setting available.

Another consideration is your wireless connectivity. You may find the connection is not stable or strong enough to maintain a high quality LiveCast. In these cases it is a matter of trial to find the setting that gives you the stability you require.

Also low light conditions can affect the performance of certain mobile devices. In these cases it is again a matter of trial to find the suitable setting.

Finally, consider the viewer's bandwidth. If the viewers are primarily accessing the video from a mobile device, then selecting a lower data rate will ensure better compatibility.

The Beta account allows up to 2 hours of LiveCast per session, approximately 55 hours total per month at 80 Kb - more at lower settings. This time is shared between livecasting and viewing.

The Beta account allows 25 simultaneous viewers at the 80 Kb (EV-DO) setting - more at lower settings.

Yes, you can choose to STREAM ONLY or to STREAM AND ARCHIVE your LiveCast. The archieved stream is then available instantly, when you press 'Stop'.

The Beta account allows you to save 100 MB of video (approximately 160 minutes of video at 80 Kbps - more at lower settings, less at higher).

Since this is for actively stored content, you are free to delete any saved LiveCast to make room for new ones. Be sure to download any LiveCasts you wish to keep prior to deleting them.

Not during the Beta phase. Once the Beta phase has ended, additional storage will be easily and cheaply available.

There is no limit during the Beta phase.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a system that relies on satellites to accurately determine your position. For more information visit: www.gpsworld.com.

If your mobile phone has a built-in GPS, you can decide if you want your exact location to be available to viewers. The GPS data is dynamically tracked and embedded in the LiveCast stream.

If your mobile device does not have built-in GPS abilities, you can use a handheld or Bluetooth unit. Connect it to your mobile device. Select the appropriate com port from the SETTINGS screen.

The GPS icons indicate the status of your GPS connectivity. GPS receivers are subject to connectivity issues similar to cell phones and generally work better outside with a clear path to satellites.

You may find that you can LiveCast fine, but the GPS receiver cannot maintain a stable signal.

When the viewer(s) watch the LiveCast, either live or on-demand, they will see a dynamic satellite image beside the media window. Waypoints or GPS data are shown as a blue dot (or a blue line if tracked by GPS) in the satellite image. GPS data in text form is available in Video Information.

The GPS co-ordinates can be input into various online mapping services such as Virtual Earth. This will allow accurate location of the LiveCast point.

You can allow your viewers to see where you are steaming from real-time.

No. GPS data is embedded in the LiveCast and is non-editable. This is what makes it appropriate in legal usage. You can, however, add or edit a Waypoint to an existing video.

Waypoints are simply geographic tags associated with a LiveCast. They can be either continents, countries, cities or even neighborhoods. Waypoints can be input during the LiveCast, or afterwards.

During LiveCast:

Go to SETTINGS screen, change Location selector to Waypoints. Go to the LiveCast screen and select waypoint.

After LiveCast (from online PC):

Sign in at www.livecast.com. From MY VIDEO, click the EDIT link of the desired LiveCast. Choose your desired waypoint from the waypoint selector. Waypoints are selectable starting at a continental level. Successive selection will allow finer detail of the waypoint.

Geotagged streaming is one of coolest features available with LiveCast. If Waypoints or GPS data is enabled on the broadcast, PC viewers can watch two screens simultaneously - one with the video, the other with mapping displaying the precise location of the LiveCast. This functions dynamically, so if the video is moving (for example streaming from a car), then the position is dynamically tracked.

No. Mapping should run without additional software installation.

Here is a checklist of possible causes:

  • Is your device on our list of supported devices?
  • Does your network support streaming video?
  • Is your network account activated for this feature?
  • Are you in network range and connected to the internet?
  • Does your signal appear strong?
  • Are cookies enabled in Internet Explorer?
  • Are proxy server settings disabled?

Red Words are references that tell you what is going on at that time. If you see an Error, it should be self explanatory. Fps = frames per second, kbps = kilobits per second

The following are the sequence of events that should occur after pressing "Start"

  • Stats c0 - Attempting to start LiveCast
  • Stats c1 - Screen becomes bright
  • Stats c2 - Creating Tunnel!
  • Stats c4 - Connecting..(001), fps will start
  • Stats c7 - Connecting..(00x), kbps and encoding/CPU analysis start)
  • Stats s5 - Livecasting Now! , kbps will constantly monitor network and strive to utilize as much uplink bandwidth as you have available in order to provide maximum fps.
  • Stats s6 - Live Webcasting Now! , Network congestion. Network is not able to pass all the data through

Try stopping the LiveCast and try lowering the settings to find a more compatible bit rate.

Also check to ensure cookies are enabled in Internet Explorer; IE>Tools>Options>Security> check Allow Cookies

Although not common, this can happen when you have poor intermittent connectivity. Our servers receive header data and connectivity breaks before video data can be transmitted.

This is likely due to connectivity issues. Check the stats at the bottom of the LiveCast screen. If the Stats start with s6, this indicates a poor connection to your network, possibly causing data packets to be lost. Although the viewer's screen will automatically resume playing when the connection gets better, you may want to check for a better network connection.

Go to the SETTINGS screen and ensure the 'Mute Audio' option is not checked.

The Blackjack's keypad entry has two design challenges. First, the key mapping is unconventional when accessing numbers or symbols, and secondly, the password field does not show characters. An easy way to address this problem is to make sure your password uses lower case letters only.

Nokia E Series phones require a certification procedure. The steps are slightly different for the Nokia E71x, than other E Series phones.

For Nokia E71x:

  • Check the date, time and year are set correctly.
  • Go to: Menu > Tools > App.Mgr. > Options* > Settings > Software Installation > set to ALL. Also Online Storage set to OFF *Options is right upper key, not systems menu
  • You may have to configure the Real Player streaming APN. This is usually done by Nokia, but we've encountered non-configured handsets from time to time. To do this, open up Real Player. Go to Options > Settings > Streaming > Network > and set the Default access point to the same APN that you receive your data on.

For all other Nokia E Series phones:

  • Check the date, time and year are set correctly.
  • Go to: Menu > Tools > App.Mgr. > Options > Settings > Software Installation > set to ALL. Also Online Storage set to OFF
  • You may have to configure the Real Player streaming APN. This is usually done by Nokia, but we've encountered non-configured handsets from time to time. To do this, open up Real Player. Go to Options > Settings > Streaming > Network > and set the Default access point to the same APN that you receive your data on.
